Before Achilles' birth, it was prophesied that he would either lead a long, quiet life or die young with eternal glory. His mother, the sea nymph Thetis, tried to make him immortal by dipping him in the River Styx, leaving only his heel vulnerable (the origin of the term “Achilles’ heel”).
